Most paving advice is written for mild climates. Minnesota is not mild. Our winters drive water deep into the ground, freeze it, and heave everything above it; our springs turn subgrade to mush; our summers bake the surface. A driveway or lot that survives here has to be built for that cycle from the base up. Everything we do starts from that reality — we'd rather fix the drainage and the base correctly than sell a pretty surface that fails in three winters.
